Cormorant Fishing Season May 11~Oct. 15

Watch the ancient tradition of cormorant fishing that has been continued here in Gifu on the Nagara River for over a millennium. Traditional cormorant fishing is where master fishermen use trained cormorants to catch ayu sweetfish, a migratory fish native to Gifu’s pristine rivers, by torchlight in the dark of night.

There are two places one can watch this ancient fishing tradition:

Yoro Park Sakura Light-Up & Site of Reversible Destiny Special

Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway Lane Expansion Complete

Now the drive from Nagoya to northern Gifu (like Takayama, Hida City, and Shirokawa-go) has become even more safe and enjoyable as the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway between Gujo and Takayama have been expanded from two to four lanes.

*Reasons for Expansion Construction
-Alleviate of traffic congestion and encourage more tourism
-Improve structural redundancy in case of natural disasters or emergencies
-Improve overall safety and reliability

*Interesting Fact
As a result of expansion construction, Washimi Bridge (located in between Takasu IC and Hiruganokogen Smart IC) will be breaking its previous record for tallest bridge-support pillar in Japan with a new height of 125m (previous height was 118m)

Hida Osaka Falls Selected For Ecotourism Award Grand Prize

Hida Osaka Falls was selected as the Grand Prize Winner for the 14th Ecotourism Awards (an award given by the Japanese Ministry of Environment).

Hida Osaka is home to over a thousand waterfalls (200 over a height of 5 meters) and is considered to have the most waterfalls concentrated in one area in all of Japan. With NPO Hida Osaka Falls, one can enjoy English tours to some the waterfalls, shower climbing, or even snowshoeing in the winter.

***Gero City Council of Ecotourism Promotions should also be mentioned as it was one of three organizations selected for the Award of Excellence

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has created the Japan Visitor Hotline call center available for foreign visitors to call in the case of an emergency (such as a natural disaster or accident) 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!
Call center agents can respond in English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

2019 Cherry Blossom Forecast

Cherry blossom season is just around the corner.
Cherry blossoms in the Gifu City area are expected to begin blossoming on March 25th with full bloom from April 1st to 9th. (The forecast for the Takayama area isn’t included on the forecast guide, but you can expect it to be sometime after the Gifu area)

Direct Bus from Takayama to Magome (Via Gero)

February 4 , 2019
Starting this April one can explore the historical post towns of Magome and Tsumago-juku with Nohi Bus services going directly from Takayama (via Gero).
This plan is perfect for those who want to see the Nakasendo post towns but are on a tight schedule. The bus will depart from Takayama in the morning (8:10) and then return later that evening (18:00).

For those motivated individuals out there you will even have enough free time to walk from Magome to Tsumago-juku and then take the bus back to Takayama.

*This bus service will only be available from April through September
*The bus will not be available to those only wanting to go from Takayama to Gero or from Magome to Tsumago-juku (or vice versa)
*Shoryudo Free Pass holders can receive a 500 yen discount off the bus fare
*Contact Nohi Bus beforehand for those with a party of 10 or more

2019 Gujo Dance Festival Schedule

The schedule for the 2019 Gujo Dance Festival has been released!
This 400-year-old festival is considered to be one of Japan’s Top Three Bon Dance Festivals.
If you’re planning on visiting Gifu this summer (from July to Sep.) make sure and check out the schedule to see if there are any dances you can make.

Shirakawa-go and Takayama Experience First Snowfall of the Year

This past weekend there was snowfall in various parts of the Hida region (such as Takayama and Shirakawa-go) and even places in southern Gifu like Gifu City are experiencing frigid temperatures.
It feels like winter has finally arrived here in Gifu.

⚠Make sure and take extra precaution when traveling and bring some heavy winter clothes.
⚠If you are driving and are unfamiliar with the roads (or driving in icy conditions), please avoid driving at night or in the early morning.

【Event Has Ended】 Excavation Survey, Free Samurai-Armor Experience, and Fall Foliage at Gifu Castle

With a plethora of activities all happening in one place, what better time is there to come and visit Gifu Castle?
◼◼◼Excavation Survey ◼◼◼
This survey is being put on by the Gifu City Board of Education in order to better understand the stone ruins at the top of Mount Kinka that are believed to date back to the age when samurai warlord Oda Nobunaga reigned from Gifu Castle in the Warring States period of Japan (around 1467–1600). This is the first full-fledge excavation survey to take place on the top of Mount Kinka and it is open to the public!
◼Period: One month starting October 24
◼Hours of Operation: Wed~Sun 9:15~15:45 (survey operations will be cancelled in the case of rain)
◼Location: 100 meters from the top station of the Mount Kinka Ropeway along the hiking path going towards Gifu Castle.

◼◼◼ Samurai Armor Experience ◼◼◼
In the Gifu Castle Museum, located near Gifu Castle at the top of Mount Kinka, one can try on some samurai armor for a period of 20 minutes free of charge. The armor-wearing experience is being offered in conjunction with the installation of trick art that makes it look like you are invading Inabayama Castle (current Gifu Castle). What a good photo opportunity!
◼Period: Now to December 24
◼Hours of Operation: Weekends and national holidays 10:00-15:00
◼Reservations: Reservation of time slots have to be made in person on the day of. Reservations will only be given to the first 20 people and can be made starting at 9:30 at the museum
◼Cost: Wearing the samurai armor is free; however, one will still need to pay for the museum admission (¥200)

◼◼◼ Autumn Foliage ◼◼◼
Changing colors of the autumn foliage around Gifu Park, Mount Kinka, and Gifu Castle can be seen from early to late November.

JR Central Plans to Completely Restore JR Takayama Line on Nov. 21

November 6 , 2018
JR Central has announced that they plan to completely restore train tracks (and resume normal train services) from Sakakami to Inotani Station on Wednesday, November 21. The Sakakami~Inotani section of the Takayama Main Line has been closed since July due to damages caused by landslides that occurred during extremely heavy rainfall.

This means that Limited Express Wide-View Hida services from Takayama to Toyama Station will also be resumed, making it possible for one to travel from Nagoya to Toyama in a quick and convenient manner.
*Reserved Seat tickets for “Wide-View Hida” services will go on sale at 10:00 on Tuesday, November 6

*****Free Wi-Fi on “Wide-View Hida” Services*****
In addition to Wide-View Hida services from Hida-Furukawa to Toyama resuming on November 21, JR Central has also announced that free Wi-Fi will be available on all “Wide-View Hida” train cars.
*Please be aware that Wi-Fi may not be usable when going through tunnels and mountainous terrain

【Event Has Ended】 Direct Bus From JR Nakatsugawa Sta. to Naegi Castle Ruins

See the castle ruins that were chosen as number one in the “Mountain Castle with a Best View” section of the travel publication Japan’s Best Castles Ranking, released in Japan this past April (Japanese name of publication: 日本の城ベストランキング).

Nakatsugawa City is offering a limited-time bus that runs from JR Nakatsugawa Station to Naegi Castle Ruins.

This direct bus is available 4 times a day on weekends and national holidays through November (below for more info).
Autumn leaves are normally viewable from early to late November, so don’t miss out on this great opportunity!

JR ”Wide View Hida” Services Between Takayama and Toyama to Resume Late November

September 5 , 2018
JR Central has announced that they expect to have damaged railroad tracks between Sakakami Sta. and Inotani Sta. restored in late November.
Along with the reopening of this section of tracks, Limited Exp. Wide View Hida services between Takayama and Toyama will also be resumed.

Until the railroad tracks are fully repaired, it is still possible to travel from Takayama to Toyama with JR using the following route:

① JR Hida-Furukawa (or Takayama) → JR Sakakami w/ “local” variant train
② JR Sakakami → JR Inotani w/ free temporary shuttle bus provided for JR passengers (see PDF for shuttle bus timetable)
③ JR Inotani → JR Toyama w/ “local” variant train

***please note that travel time will be considerably longer than normal because only “local” trains are available to use

JR Takayama Line “Wide View Hida" Services to Takayama, Gero, and Hida Furukawa Restored

August 14 , 2018
As of August 11, railroad tracks from Hida-Kanayama Station to Gero Station have been restored, and along with it, Limited Express Wide View Hida services from Nagoya to Takayama and Hida Furukawa (via Gero Hot Springs).

Please note that the section of railroad tracks between Sakakami Station and Intotani Station remains to be closed; therefore, Limited Express Wide View Hida services inbetween Hida-Furukawa and Toyama are still suspended (repairs are expected to take a few months).
***It’s still possible to travel from Takayama to Toyama with JR by utilizing their temporary shuttle buses (see attached timetable)

JR Central is recommending that “Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass” holders use highway buses from Takayama to Kanazawa or Shin-Takaoka via Shirakawa-go; these buses are included on the “Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass” but not the standard JR Rail Pass.
